Salmon is much appreciated food, the choice of many people all around the world.

 

 

Apart from having excellent taste, it is very beneficial for one's health, it is rich in protein, vitamins A, D, E and numerous minerals. It is characterised by a high content of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are a major health foodstuff.

Salmon, as a two-habitat fish, lives and feeds in the sea, and returns to rivers for spawning. Spawning places are sometimes located up to a couple hundred kilometres away from the river mouth. Spawning takes place on a sand-gravel floor in swift waters. The female digs 2- to 3-meter long redds with her tail, by beating her tail against the bottom. She deposits her eggs in the redds (approximately: 1000 eggs per 1 kilogram of body weight).

Young salmon live on the spawning sites for the first 2-4 years. Yet, they grow up in the sea, where they go to feed intensively. The cycle is finished after next 3-5 years, when mature salmon return to rivers for spawning.

The salmon measure from 50-150 cm in length and weigh 5-30 kg. Of course, once can come across exceptions - bigger and heavier salmon.

Salmon is a predator. It feeds on bottom fauna, other fish, sometimes insects caught at the surface of water. Its elongated body with a narrow tail stem, as well as a relatively small head with a pointed mouth with a wide mouth opening (reaching even behind its eye) help it feed.
